Full title and description

GOST 22985-2017 — Liquefied hydrocarbon (petroleum) gases. Method for determination of hydrogen sulfide, mercaptan sulfur and carbonyl sulfide (carbon sulphoxide). The standard specifies a wet-chemical absorption and potentiometric titration method for quantitative determination of these sulfur-containing components in liquefied hydrocarbon gases.

Russian title: "Газы углеводородные сжиженные. Метод определения сероводорода, меркаптановой серы и серооксида углерода".

Abstract

This national/interstate standard (GOST 22985-2017) establishes laboratory procedures for sampling and analytical determination of hydrogen sulfide (H2S), mercaptan sulfur and carbonyl sulfide in liquefied hydrocarbon gases (LPG and related refinery/light hydrocarbon fractions). The method is based on selective absorption of analytes into alkaline and/or amine solutions followed by potentiometric titration with silver nitrate-ammonium nitrate reagent; applicable concentration ranges and typical laboratory apparatus and reagents are specified.

General information

  • Status: Active / in force (implemented as a national standard of the Russian Federation; replaced the 1990 edition).
  • Publication date: Approved 5 October 2017; introduced into national use from 1 July 2019.
  • Publisher: Federal Agency on Technical Regulating and Metrology (Rosstandart) / interstate standard body (GOST system).
  • ICS / categories: Fuel and related products — Gases; classification under extraction and processing of oil and gas (see classifiers for gaseous fuel and testing/control of petroleum/gas products).
  • Edition / version: GOST 22985-2017 (current edition introduced 2017).
  • Number of pages: Document length reported in commercial catalogues varies (commonly listed as 24–28 pages depending on format and language version).

Scope

The standard applies to liquefied hydrocarbon gases and related light hydrocarbon fractions (excluding liquefied natural gas) and specifies methods for determination of hydrogen sulfide and mercaptan sulfur in the mass-fraction range from 0.0002% to 2%. It may also be used to determine carbonyl sulfide (carbon sulphoxide) where present simultaneously with H2S and mercaptans at mass fractions from 0.0002% up to about 0.5%. The procedure covers sample absorption, reagent preparation, titration and calculation of results, as well as recommended apparatus and safety/quality controls.

Key topics and requirements

  • Defined analytical method based on selective absorption of H2S and mercaptans in alkaline/carbonate solutions and absorption of carbonyl sulfide in monoethanolamine solution, followed by potentiometric titration with silver nitrate-ammonium nitrate titrant.
  • Specified applicability ranges: H2S and mercaptan sulfur 0.0002%–2% (mass fraction); carbonyl sulfide ~0.0002%–0.5% where co-present.
  • Requirements for sampling, apparatus (absorption flasks, gas meter, laboratory balances, drying ovens, thermometers), reagents and calibration/quality control.
  • Procedures for handling interfering components, selective pre-absorption steps (e.g., carbonate solution stage) and recommended safety/ventilation measures for tests.
  • Reporting and calculation formulas for converting titration results to mass fraction concentrations in gas samples.

Typical use and users

Laboratories and quality-control units in oil refineries, LPG production and distribution facilities, gas-processing plants, petrochemical laboratories and independent testing laboratories use this standard to quantify sulfur contaminants (H2S, mercaptans, carbonyl sulfide) that affect safety, odorization, corrosion and product specification compliance. Regulatory bodies and certification organizations may reference it for conformity assessment of LPG and light hydrocarbon streams.

Related standards

Related and referenced documents include earlier national standards and methods for sampling and reagent specifications (for example, GOST 14921 series on sampling of liquefied hydrocarbon gases, reagents standards such as GOST 1277 for silver nitrate, and other analytical GOSTs for detection and measurement of sulfur compounds). The 2017 edition replaces GOST 22985-90 and aligns with other GOST/industry methods for gas analysis.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: GOST 22985-2017 is a Russian/interstate standard that specifies laboratory methods for determining hydrogen sulfide, mercaptan sulfur and carbonyl sulfide in liquefied hydrocarbon gases using absorption and potentiometric titration techniques.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers sample treatment, reagents, apparatus, selective absorption steps, titration procedure and calculation/reporting of mass-fraction results for H2S, mercaptans and (where applicable) carbonyl sulfide within defined concentration ranges. It excludes liquefied natural gas.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Analytical and quality-control laboratories in refineries, LPG producers and distributors, petrochemical plants, and third-party testing laboratories use the standard for product quality verification and regulatory compliance.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: This is the current (2017) edition; it was approved on 5 October 2017 and introduced into national application on 1 July 2019, replacing the previous GOST 22985-90. Users should check national registries for any subsequent amendments or corrigenda.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: It is part of the family of GOST standards covering analysis, sampling and specifications for hydrocarbon gases and related reagents/equipment (references to GOST sampling standards, reagent standards and other gas-analysis methods appear in its normative references), but it is a standalone method standard rather than a numbered multi-part series.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Hydrogen sulfide, mercaptan sulfur, mercaptans, carbonyl sulfide (carbon sulphoxide), liquefied hydrocarbon gases, LPG, absorption, potentiometric titration, gas analysis, GOST 22985-2017.
