Full title and description

GOST R 52517-2005 — "Reciprocating internal combustion engines. Performance. Part 1. Standard reference conditions, declaration of power, fuel and lubricating oil consumptions. Test methods" (Russian: ГОСТ Р 52517-2005. Двигатели внутреннего сгорания поршневые. Характеристики. Часть 1. Стандартные исходные условия, объявление мощности, расхода топлива и смазочного масла. Методы испытаний).

Abstract

This national standard establishes standard reference conditions and defines how manufacturers declare engine power and specific consumptions (fuel and lubricating oil), together with the test methods and correction procedures to bring measured results to declared (standard) conditions. It implements/adopts the content of ISO 3046‑1:2002 with additional national provisions where applicable.

General information

  • Status: Active / national standard of the Russian Federation (in force).
  • Publication date: Designation year 2005; date of introduction into force 1 January 2007 (with amendments/corrections published in official indexes).
  • Publisher: National standard of the Russian Federation — adopted and published under the authority of the Federal Agency on Technical Regulating and Metrology (Rosstandart) / national standards system.
  • ICS / categories: OKС (ICS) 27.020 — Internal combustion engines.
  • Edition / version: GOST R 52517-2005 (implements ISO 3046‑1:2002; replaces earlier GOST R ISO 3046‑1‑99 and GOST R ISO 3046‑7‑2001 where applicable).
  • Number of pages: 35 pages (common commercial editions and catalogue entries list 35 pages).

Scope

The standard applies to reciprocating (piston) internal combustion engines intended for general use, including industrial, marine and locomotive applications running on liquid or gaseous fuels. It defines the standard reference environmental and auxiliary-equipment conditions, the methods for declaring power and specific consumptions, test procedures, and the procedures for correcting and converting measured power and specific fuel/oil consumptions to the declared (standard) basis. The standard does not apply to engines used for tractor, automobile or aircraft propulsion.

Key topics and requirements

  • Definition of standard reference conditions (temperature, atmospheric pressure, humidity, intake/exhaust resistances, intake-air cooling) used for power declarations and comparison of engines.
  • Rules for declaration of different power ratings (standard power, continuous/duty ratings) and coded power designations.
  • Methods for measuring and declaring fuel consumption (specific fuel consumption) and lubricating‑oil consumption, including test instrumentation and calculation formulas.
  • Correction and conversion procedures to bring test results from local ambient conditions to standard reference conditions (including atmospheric and temperature correction coefficients).
  • Requirements for test reports: essential engine and auxiliary equipment data, test conditions, measured and corrected results, and presentation of declared values.

Typical use and users

Used by engine manufacturers and designers for declaring performance and consumptions; by test laboratories and quality departments to perform and report standardized engine tests; by procurement, classification societies and regulatory bodies to verify manufacturer declarations; and by research and engineering teams performing engine selection, performance comparisons, and compliance checks.

Related standards

Implements/adopts ISO 3046‑1:2002 (reciprocating internal combustion engines — performance — part 1). It replaces or supersedes earlier national adoptions of ISO 3046 parts (for example GOST R ISO 3046‑1‑99 and GOST R ISO 3046‑7‑2001) and references other national GOSTs covering related topics such as emissions, engine designation and rotation direction (examples: GOST R 51249, GOST 10150, GOST 10448, GOST 22836, GOST 23550).

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: GOST R 52517-2005 is the Russian national standard specifying reference conditions, declaration rules and test methods for the performance (power) and specific consumptions (fuel and lubricating oil) of reciprocating internal combustion engines.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers measurement and declaration of engine power and specific fuel and oil consumptions, the standard environmental and auxiliary-equipment conditions for declarations, test procedures, and correction/conversion formulas to standard conditions. It applies to general-purpose industrial, marine and locomotive piston engines (not to road vehicles, tractors or aircraft).

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Engine manufacturers, independent and in-house test laboratories, certification and conformity-assessment bodies, classification societies, procurement and specification engineers, and organizations that compare or verify engine performance claims.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: As listed in national catalogues and the official text database, GOST R 52517-2005 is an active (in‑force) national standard with an introduction date of 1 January 2007; users should check the official national standards index or Rosstandart notices for any later amendments or replacement notices before relying on it for compliance work.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: Yes — this document is Part 1 of the performance series for reciprocating internal combustion engines (aligned with ISO 3046 series). Other parts of the ISO/GOST series cover additional performance, measurement and test aspects; consult the ISO 3046 series and related GOST documents for complementary parts.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Engine performance; standard reference conditions; power declaration; specific fuel consumption; oil consumption; test method; reciprocating engines; ISO 3046.
