ГОСТ 12337-2020
Motor oils for diesel engines. Specifications
Full title and description
GOST 12337-2020 — "Масла моторные для дизельных двигателей. Технические условия" (English: "Motor oils for diesel engines. Specifications"). This interstate (GOST) standard establishes technical requirements and specifications for motor oils intended for marine, locomotive (thermal locomotive) and other diesel engines, including classification by grades, physico‑chemical parameters and required test methods.
Abstract
This standard replaces the previous edition (GOST 12337-84) and defines the composition, properties, marking, packaging and quality control methods for diesel engine motor oils. It sets kinematic viscosity ranges, viscosity index, additives/performance considerations, and test procedures necessary to verify conformity of oils used in ship, locomotive and industrial diesel engines.
General information
- Status: Active (in force).
- Publication date: Issued 16 November 2020; introduced (effective) 1 July 2021.
- Publisher: Approved by the Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology (Rosstandart); published/distributed via national standards publishers (Standartinform / national standards catalogues).
- ICS / categories: 75.100 — Lubricants, industrial oils and related products.
- Edition / version: 2020 (GOST 12337-2020).
- Number of pages: Approximately 20 pages (standard text length may vary by publisher/version).
Scope
GOST 12337-2020 applies to motor oils formulated for diesel engines used in marine vessels, diesel locomotives (thermal locomotives) and other industrial diesel engines. The standard covers oil grade designations, required physical and chemical properties (including kinematic viscosity, viscosity index, flash point, pour point, ash content and acidity), performance-related characteristics and the methods to test these properties. It is intended for manufacturers, testing laboratories and procurement/specification bodies that require nationally harmonized technical requirements for diesel engine oils.
Key topics and requirements
- Classification of oil grades and designation system for diesel engine oils (marks such as M-10, M-14, M-16 and variants used in marine/locomotive applications).
- Specified ranges for kinematic viscosity at 100 °C and required viscosity index values for different marks.
- Limits and test methods for flash point, pour point, total base number (TBN) or acidity, sulfated ash and water content.
- Performance and additive requirements (detergency, dispersancy, anti‑corrosion, antioxidant and anti‑foam properties) appropriate for heavy-fuel operation where applicable.
- Packaging, marking, storage and transportation requirements; rules for conformity assessment and sampling/testing procedures.
Typical use and users
Primary users of GOST 12337-2020 include motor oil and lubricant manufacturers, quality and R&D laboratories, ship and locomotive builders/operators, procurement and maintenance departments in transport and heavy industry, conformity assessment bodies, and national/regional regulators. The standard is used to specify product acceptance criteria, to support type‑approval and purchase specifications, and as a reference for lab testing and quality control.
Related standards
GOST 12337-2020 replaces GOST 12337-84. It references and is used alongside other standards and regulations applicable to lubricants and testing methods (examples include various GOST test methods, related GOST R modern standards and technical regulations of the Eurasian Economic Union concerning lubricants and oils). Selected normative references cited in the standard include national test-method GOSTs and related product classification documents.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: GOST 12337-2020 is the interstate (GOST) standard that specifies technical requirements and test methods for motor oils intended for diesel engines (marine, locomotive and other diesel applications).
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers oil grade designations, physico‑chemical property limits (viscosity, viscosity index, flash point, pour point, ash, acidity/TBN, etc.), performance expectations (additive functions), sampling, testing and marking/packaging rules required to certify and use diesel engine oils in the specified applications.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Oil/lubricant manufacturers, engine builders and operators (ships, locomotives, industrial diesel users), testing and certification laboratories, procurement/specification teams and regulatory authorities use this standard for product specification, testing and compliance.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: It is current (in force). GOST 12337-2020 was approved in 2020 and introduced as effective from 1 July 2021; it replaces the earlier GOST 12337-84. The standard was entered into national use by Rosstandart directive when adopted as the national standard.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: The document is an interstate GOST standard assigned to the subject area of petroleum products and lubricants (ICS 75.100) and is managed within the technical committee structure for fuels and lubricants; it references and is used together with other GOST test-methods and regulatory documents covering lubrication materials.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Motor oils, diesel engines, lubricant specifications, viscosity, marine diesel oil, locomotive oil, testing methods, GOST 12337, additives, TBN.
