Full title and description

STB BS EN ISO 9013-2017 — Thermal cutting — Classification of thermal cuts — Geometrical product specification and quality tolerances. This document is the EN/BS adoption of ISO 9013:2017 (Edition 3) and sets out a unified system for classifying the geometry and quality of cuts produced by thermal processes (oxyfuel/flame cutting, plasma cutting and laser cutting) and the associated dimensional tolerances to be used when referenced on drawings and delivery documents. The standard is accompanied by Amendment 1 (2024) which provides clarifications and minor technical/editorial updates to the 2017 text.

Abstract

ISO 9013:2017 provides geometrical product specifications and quality tolerances for thermal cuts in materials suitable for oxyfuel (flame) cutting, plasma cutting and laser cutting. It defines quality levels and the dimensional/tolerance requirements that apply when the standard is invoked on drawings or in contractual documents. Applicable thickness ranges are given for each cutting process; flatness defects are not addressed by this document and material-specific references remain governed by the relevant material standards. The standard is intended to ensure consistent interpretation of cut quality between suppliers, designers and purchasers.

  • Edition / version: Edition 3 (ISO 9013:2017), adopted as BS EN ISO 9013:2017; includes Amendment 1 (2024)
  • Number of pages: 28 (ISO published text; pagination may vary in national adoption documents)

Scope

This standard specifies geometrical product specifications and quality tolerances for classification of thermal cuts for materials suitable for oxyfuel (flame) cutting, plasma cutting and laser cutting. It is applicable to flame cuts from approximately 3 mm to 300 mm thickness, to plasma cuts from approximately 0.5 mm to 150 mm, and to laser cuts from approximately 0.5 mm to 32 mm. The geometrical product specifications and tolerances in this document apply when explicitly referenced on drawings or in delivery conditions; use of the standard for parts produced by other cutting processes must be agreed separately. Flatness defects are outside the scope of this document and should be addressed by the appropriate material or product standards.

Key topics and requirements

  • Classification of thermal-cut quality levels and associated geometrical product specifications (surface and edge geometry parameters).
  • Dimensional quality tolerances for thermal cut edges (including angularity, deviation from straightness, edge waviness and kerf-related dimensions) as specified per process and thickness range.
  • Applicable thickness ranges for oxyfuel (flame), plasma and laser cutting and how tolerances vary with process and cut quality level.
  • Requirements for referencing the standard on engineering drawings and in purchase/delivery conditions to ensure contractual application.
  • Notes on exclusions: flatness defects are not covered; material-specific requirements remain governed by the relevant material standards.
  • Provision for national adoption/interpretation and for exceptions where other cutting processes are used (must be mutually agreed).

Typical use and users

Used by fabricators, metalwork manufacturers, subcontract cutting shops, engineering designers, quality inspectors, procurement and contracts teams, inspection and testing bodies, and standards committees. Typical applications include product drawings and specifications where cut-edge geometry and quality must be clearly defined (structural components, plate work, welded assemblies and machined parts produced from thermally cut blanks).

Related standards

Commonly used alongside national adoptions (BS EN ISO 9013:2017) and its predecessor ISO 9013:2002. Often referenced together with material and welding standards and with standards for welding procedure specification and qualification (for example the ISO 15614 series) and general dimensional tolerance standards. Users should also consider applicable material standards and any process-specific standards produced by ISO/TC 44/SC 8 or national standards bodies when specifying cut quality and delivery conditions.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 9013:2017 (adopted as BS EN ISO 9013:2017) is an international standard that defines classification, geometrical product specification and quality tolerances for edges produced by thermal cutting processes (oxyfuel, plasma, laser).

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers classification of thermal-cut quality levels and the dimensional/tolerance requirements for those levels, including applicable thickness ranges for flame, plasma and laser cutting. Flatness defects are not covered by this standard.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Manufacturers, fabricators, cutters, design engineers, quality and inspection personnel, procurement and contract specifiers who need to define or verify cut-edge geometry and quality on drawings and in delivery conditions.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: The 2017 third edition (ISO 9013:2017) is the current edition of the standard and has been amended by Amendment 1 published in 2024. Check the national standards body or publisher for the latest national adoption/confirmation status before purchase or formal citation.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: It is part of the body of ISO and EN standards covering welding and allied processes (ISO/TC 44 and related committees). While not a numbered series per se, it is commonly used together with other ISO standards dealing with welding procedure qualification, material specifications and general tolerances.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Thermal cutting, oxyfuel, plasma, laser, cut quality, geometrical product specification, tolerances, BS EN ISO 9013.
