Full title and description

GOST R IEC 60079-25-2012 — "Explosive atmospheres. Part 25. Intrinsically safe systems" (ГОСТ Р МЭК 60079-25-2012). National adoption of IEC 60079-25 giving requirements for design, construction and assessment of intrinsically safe electrical systems (type of protection "i") for use wholly or partly in explosive gas and dust atmospheres.

Abstract

This standard defines special requirements for intrinsically safe electrical systems (Ex i), including system documentation, parameter limits (capacitance, inductance, energy/power), installation and interconnection rules, types of system-level tests and considerations for known system concepts such as FISCO/FNICO and interface requirements for associated apparatus. It is the Russian-adopted version of IEC 60079-25 (2010).

General information

  • Status: Withdrawn / cancelled (nationally withdrawn 30 June 2023; superseded by national standard ГОСТ 31610.25-2022).
  • Publication date: Introduced 1 July 2013 (designation year 2012). Approved/registered in 2012; national date of entry into force 01.07.2013.
  • Publisher: National Standard of the Russian Federation / Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology (Rosstandart) — national adoption of IEC text (Russian and English language editions available commercially).
  • ICS / categories: 29.260.20 — Electrical apparatus for explosive atmospheres.
  • Edition / version: GOST R IEC 60079-25-2012 (based on IEC 60079-25:2010).
  • Number of pages: Approximately 65 pages (national publication).

Scope

Specifies special requirements for the design, construction, documentation and assessment of intrinsically safe electrical systems (type of protection "i") intended for use wholly or partly in explosive atmospheres — gas (groups I and II) and combustible dust (group III). Applies to system-level parameters, interconnection rules, maximum permissible cable parameters, grouping and combination rules, and tests required to demonstrate system safety. It is intended to be used together with the general IEC 60079 series requirements (notably IEC 60079-0).

Key topics and requirements

  • Definition and classification of intrinsically safe systems (levels ia, ib, ic) and associated documentation requirements (descriptive system document, system designer responsibilities).
  • Component and system parameter limits: maximum cable capacitance and inductance, allowable source characteristics (linear/rectangular/non-linear), and energy/power limits for safe operation.
  • Rules for interconnection of certified apparatus and summation rules for voltages/currents when combining circuits and devices.
  • Design and verification of common intrinsically safe concepts such as FISCO and FNICO, and guidance on allowable cable lengths and network topologies.
  • Test methods and type-test requirements for system validation, including verification of non-linear elements, surge protection considerations and documentation needed to support certification.
  • Installation guidance: screens/earthing practices for cable screens, segregation to prevent inadvertent circuit connection, and protections for surge/lightning where applicable.

Typical use and users

Used by designers, system integrators, test laboratories, certification bodies and end-users in industries where explosive atmospheres may occur (oil & gas, petrochemical, chemical, mining, grain handling, pharmaceuticals). Typical users include electrical engineers responsible for hazardous-area instrumentation and control systems, product certification teams, and compliance managers implementing national/regional explosion-protection requirements.

Related standards

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: GOST R IEC 60079-25-2012 is the Russian-adopted version of IEC 60079-25 (2010) titled "Explosive atmospheres — Part 25: Intrinsically safe systems", giving system-level requirements for intrinsically safe electrical systems intended for explosive gas and dust atmospheres.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers system design rules (ia/ib/ic levels), allowed source and cable parameters (capacitance, inductance), interconnection and summation rules for combining certified equipment, system documentation, test and type-test requirements, and guidance on recognised intrinsically safe concepts (FISCO/FNICO) and installation considerations.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Electrical and instrumentation engineers, system designers, certification bodies, test laboratories, safety/compliance officers and plant operators in industries with potentially explosive atmospheres (petrochemical, oil & gas, chemical, mining, grain handling, etc.).

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: It has been nationally withdrawn (cancelled) — the GOST R IEC 60079-25-2012 text was withdrawn in the Russian system 30 June 2023 and superseded by the updated national standard ГОСТ 31610.25-2022, which aligns with the later IEC/EN consolidated editions. For current compliance use the successor (ГОСТ 31610.25-2022 / EN IEC 60079-25:2022) and check the latest national implementation notes.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: Yes — it is Part 25 of the IEC 60079 series (equipment and protective systems intended for use in explosive atmospheres). It is intended to be used together with IEC 60079-0 (general requirements) and other relevant parts of IEC 60079 depending on protection types and installation.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Intrinsically safe, Ex i, intrinsically safe system, FISCO, FNICO, hazardous areas, explosive atmospheres, cable capacitance, cable inductance, system tests, GOST R, IEC 60079-25.
